Our criteria for Athlete of the Month is pretty simple. We like to reward members who display the following traits:
They come and train regularly
They listen and take on board the advice of our coaches
They make measurable progress in their training (no matter the starting point of fitness)
They take their training seriously but don’t take themselves too seriously
They contribute to our community
Our athlete of the month for February is a great example of all of the above. Elena came to us with no real training experience other than running, definitely a common theme among many of our members.
In just over a year of training, Elena is not only one of our better athletes in terms of technique, intensity and hard work, but also one of our better performers.
Congratulations Elena on winning athlete of the month for February!
Where are you from?
How did you discover CrossFit?
A friend of mine was doing it and suggested me to try since I was doing no sports at all. But I was always thinking about getting up from the sofa and doing something to avoid the stress from my job.
What sort of fitness/sports were you doing before?
Nothing at all. I tried a few times to go running, but no more than 5 km.
Do you remember your first CrossFit workout? How was it?
I do not really remember the first WOD but I remember the trial session. I entered the box and saw two amazing girls’ backs (Elsa and Samantha) in the rowers and Daniel González shouting at everybody. I was scared as well as fascinated. I really wanted to start that! In addition, I always remember one of my first WODs, where we had to do thrusters. I was struggling with the empty barbell and Bruce told me “good job, next time with 20 kg”. I thought “20 kg? Are you crazy???”. Now I love weighted thrusters.
What is your favourite workout?
Anyone including double-unders, snatches, sit-ups, box jumps and/or squats.
What is your favourite exercise?
Back squat and snatch
What weaknesses are you working on right now?
Speed. I need to rest less during the WODs in order to go faster.
What are your goals for 2016?
Hand-stand (without touching the wall), butterfly pull-ups and a good kip in the toes-to-bar.
What achievement are you most proud of?
Double unders and hand-stand push-ups.
What are your PRs in the following:
Back squat – 85 kg
Deadlift – 106 kg
Clean – 57 kg
Fran – 8:38 min
Helen – 12:41
Jackie – 11:45
