I have had a lot of conversations recently at the gym that go something like this.
Me: Have you signed up for the Open yet?
Athlete: Are you kidding? I can only do 1 pull up and I suck at thrusters.
I have used pull ups and thrusters here, but you can exchange them for overhead squats, muscle ups, snatch row etc etc (you get the idea).
If I don’t get the exercise comment, I usually get one of the following:
Athlete: I can’t this year. I’m really busy at work. I’m travelling in week 2. I have friends visiting. Weekends are hard for me to come in. My dog is feeling sick, blah, blah, blah…
I get it. You don’t think you should sign up for the Open. You are not ready yet, you are nervous about putting your performances up for scrutiny among your peers. You are scared.
Guess what? You will NEVER be ready to do the Open and you will ALWAYS be scared. And that is a very good thing!
I don’t know anyone who trains at CrossFit GVA who is not nervous about the Open. I also don’t know anyone, regardless of fitness levels, who is not dreading certain movements coming up.
Everyone has strengths and weaknesses. It is natural to look around at other people at the gym and think “I wish I could do what that guy/girl does”. Everyone does it, regardless of fitness levels.
I get to mix with all athletes from beginner to advanced and the conversations are always the same. Nobody is happy with where they are with their fitness levels. The guy with 100kg snatch is pissed because he can’t get to 110. The guy with 1 double under is going crazy because he can’t get the second.
Wherever you are on the fitness scale there are always people above and below you and they feel exactly the same. It’s just a question of perspective.
If you look at this negatively, it would seem that wherever you go you will never be satisfied. Really though it is a positive. That unhappiness is what drives people to get better and to keep working. And nothing inspires or motivates people to get better more than the CrossFit Open.
So what if you can’t do a pull up yet. You can still do the Open.
Get out of your comfort zone and get an honest assessment of your fitness levels. Nobody will belittle you for putting yourself on the line and signing up.
You might surprise yourself with your performance. You might get a kick in the teeth and realise you are not as fit as you thought you were.
Whatever happens you won’t regret it.
