I’ve always been obsessed with fitness, strength, work capacity and all things athletic. I was a very mediocre sportsman growing up, impaired by certain physical limitations that I never really understood until recently. It was my own, frustrating experiences on the field of play and in the gym that led me to want to learn as much as possible about fitness and how to maximise my own efforts and those of others.
Once I stopped playing competitive sport in my early twenties, I followed the traditional route of taking up jogging to lose weight and keep fit. I joined a gym, but only so I could use the various pieces of cardio equipment. I never dared enter the other side where the dumbbells and barbells were kept, too intimidated by the grunting bodybuilders and frankly clueless as to what I could do there. Gradually I got closer to the free weight area, via the strength machines and my desire for a bigger, leaner body took hold.
I liked bodybuilding, but I never really made much progress or understood what I was doing. It was only when I discovered CrossFit that the light bulb went off. Suddenly I was exposed to olympic lifting, powerlifting, gymnastics and training for performance, rather than looks. I learned more in 1 year than I had learned in the previous 10 and that is what led me down the path of wanting to teach other people about fitness.
Getting fit is like acquisition of any skill from learning a new language to playing a musical instrument. You can try to learn on your own, which although cheap and easy, is also difficult and often ends in frustration and failure. Or you can find a good teacher, pony up some cash and actually reach your goals. Fitness is the same. Learning the key movements and having a basic understanding of what you want to achieve will stand you in good stead for the rest of your training life, which will hopefully also be the rest of your natural life.
Training should not be about paying for an annual membership and having a trainer show you how to use the leg press or treadmill. It should be a journey of discovery where you learn about your goals and methods so that you can take control of your own fitness, and not be reliant on a single gym or piece of equipment. We hope that if you join us at CrossFit GVA, you can free yourself of your preconceived fitness notions and become your own best coach.
