Member of the month Janine Gilliand

We're delighted to share the inspiring #CrossFitStory of Janine Gilliand, who has been training with us since this year. Find out more about her journey, how she trains to achieve her goals and what motivates her to stay with CrossFit GVA.

Janine, can you introduce yourself in a few words?
Hello, my name is Janine, I was born in 1968 (I'll let you do the math 😉 ). Age is just a number to me, because in my head and in my body I'm much younger. I'm from the canton of Vaud and moved to Geneva in 1992. I'm a secretary and MLC© practitioner.

When did you start CrossFit and why?
I started CrossFit in July 2023. The idea of doing CrossFit had been in the back of my mind for some time, but I'd never dared to take the plunge because of preconceived ideas, such as: your back will widen, you'll become a "mass", and so on. With my fitness subscription coming to an end, I needed something new and so I went to visit CrossFit GVA 1227, which I really liked, and without hesitation I signed up.

Did you do any other sports before?
I've always been active, fitness and walking.

What was your goal when you started out? Have you achieved it since?
My goal when I started CrossFit was to surprise my children by taking part in a 5km Spartan race with them in November 2023. Thanks to CrossFit and regular training 3 times a week, I gained in strength and was able to pass obstacles without the help of my children. I was proud to do this Spartan with them.

What are your goals for 2024?
My goals are to take part in 5 to 10km Spartans with even greater autonomy.

What do you particularly like about CrossFit GVA?
I'll always remember when I visited CrossFit GVA 1227 for the first time. Titouan made me feel very welcome and I really appreciated his coaching style and the great energy he exudes.
I really like the atmosphere, I felt welcomed by the coaches and the other participants. I particularly appreciate the coaches' advice, professionalism and kindness. The classes are different every time, which I really like.

Have you gained in confidence since you started CrossFit? Do you feel better in your body, have you developed your mental outlook?
Yes, I've gained confidence both physically and mentally. CrossFit takes me beyond my limits and my comfort zone. Seeing my evolution in such a short time motivates me and makes me proud of myself. Sometimes I feel frustrated because I haven't managed to do the move, but that's only temporary, because the more I train, the more comfortable I get and the more confident I become. CrossFit also makes it easier to do everyday movements. I can also see the results on my body, and to reach the goals I've set myself, I'm monitored by Jon in nutrition and I regularly do a Body scan, which gives me a complete follow-up.

Do you have a memorable experience at the box that you'd like to share?
My first class involved box jumps, i.e. jumping onto a wooden box, a very difficult exercise for me because I'm afraid of jumping. So Titouan took my fear into consideration and got me to jump on the flats, gradually adding height. I really appreciated his approach, which gave me the confidence to one day jump onto a box.

What would you say to someone who's hesitating to start CrossFit for fear of injury or lack of skill?
I'd tell them to put aside their prejudices and give it a try, because CrossFit is accessible to everyone, at any age. The coaches are there to guide us, advise us and help us to surpass ourselves in complete safety.
