We're pleased to share the inspiring and amazing #CrossFitStory of Nicolas Duport, who has been training with us for several years. Find out more about his journey, how he trains to reach his goals and what motivates him to stay with CrossFit GVA.
Nicolas, can you introduce yourself in a few words?
I'm 32 years old and was born and educated in Geneva. Today, following a career change, I work in the security sector. Before that, I worked in the social sector. As far as sport is concerned, my first passion was competitive chess. It may come as a surprise, but chess is considered a sport, even though it is not included in the Olympic Games. My chess activity has enabled me to discover the world by traveling regularly to take part in different tournaments. It has also introduced me to the world of teaching, in which I have been involved for several years. In my early twenties, I discovered strength sports, powerlifting and weightlifting.
When did you start CrossFit and why?
I discovered CrossFit in 2010 when I started strength sports, but I don't consider myself a classic CrossFitter, so my relationship with CrossFit is different. I currently use the CrossFit methodology to achieve my own personal goals.
Did you play any other sport before?
As a child I played tennis, then I discovered chess. In my early twenties I discovered strength sports. So before coming to CrossFit GVA I had a background in strength sports.
What was your goal when you started out? Have you achieved it since?
I came to CrossFit GVA to prepare for entrance exams in the security industry, with a view to joining a corps and a brigade. The CrossFit methodology is particularly effective and complete.
What are your goals for 2024?
I'd love to take part in CrossFit competitions with my box mates.
What do you particularly like about CrossFit GVA?
I chose CrossFit GVA for its team of coaches, who are particularly friendly and competent.
Have you gained in confidence since you started CrossFit? Do you feel better in your body and have you developed your mental outlook?
I've been able to build up my physical fitness, and I'm now very confident in the professional arena. I know that I'm prepared to deal with emergency and intervention situations that would require physical qualities.
Do you have any special memories of the box that you'd like to share?
I don't have "one" outstanding memory, but when I leave the box I always have a feeling of satisfaction. I've never been disappointed with my training.
What would you say to someone who's hesitating to start CrossFit for fear of injury or lack of skill?
The first thing to know is that CrossFit enables you to train 4 physical performance factors: Strength, Muscular Endurance, Cardiovascular Capacity, Speed and Explosiveness. The CrossFit methodology uses to its advantage various sports that are particularly effective in physical preparation, such as weightlifting (for strength and explosiveness), powerlifting (for strength), a few gymnastic movements (for upper-body strength and coordination), running (to strengthen joints and improve the cardiovascular system) and so on. For someone looking to improve their overall fitness, I'd strongly recommend the CrossFit methodology.
