Member of the month Raquel Dominguez

We're excited to share the inspiring and positive #CrossFitStory of Raquel Dominguez, who has been training with us since 2019. Learn about her journey, her training to reach her goals and what motivates her to stay with CrossFit GVA.

Raquel, can you introduce yourself in a few words?
I'm 29 years old and come from the north-west of Spain, from a small town called Ponferrada. I moved to Switzerland 9 years ago, where I work as an early childhood educator.

When did you start CrossFit and why?
My sister encouraged me to try CrossFit in 2019. My first trial class with Jon is etched in my memory (smile)! The class was fun and perfectly matched what I was looking for: strength and high-intensity cardio. So, despite a two-year fitness membership, I immediately signed up for CrossFit GVA and never went back to a "classic" gym. In the early days, CrossFit was a form of therapy for me, allowing me to escape from the difficulties I'd encountered when I arrived in Switzerland at the age of 20. It quickly became a passion.

What do you like about CrossFit compared to other sports?
Its diversity and the possibility of surpassing yourself on a daily basis. CrossFit has taught me discipline and self-control, while enabling me to develop as an athlete in many areas. My focus is as much on health as on performance. CrossFit encourages me to push myself further and discover what I'm capable of.

You recently underwent surgery. How are you coping with this period of convalescence, both physically and mentally?
The announcement of my operation first made me think of the Open, which I couldn't do, which was a blow morally, but my health came first. I was able to rely on my circle of friends, mainly from the box, to keep me on track before, during and after the operation. Their support was a real pillar of strength.

Are you training while you recover? If so, how?
Yes, I continue to train four times a week. Thanks to the help of my friend Romain Mancini, who is also an excellent therapist, and our coach Titouan Verloes, I've been able to adapt almost every movement. They played a crucial role in my physical AND mental recovery. I'm infinitely grateful to them.

What are your sporting objectives for this year?
My main objective is to get back into the shape I was in before the operation, do muscle-ups (smile) and, above all, continue to enjoy myself and meet new people.

What do you particularly like about CrossFit GVA?
The atmosphere, without a doubt! Although I wasn't able to take part in the Open this year as an athlete, the experience was just as exceptional. We've created a close-knit community that supports each other. It's this atmosphere that motivates me to come back every day.

What's the best advice you've received from your coaches?
To take things calmly and gently. I'm naturally impatient, but thanks to them I've learned to channel my energy. Their ability to get to know us and accompany us is remarkable, turning bad days into positive experiences.

What advice would you give to someone who's hesitating to start CrossFit?
I'd simply say: "Go for it... CrossFit is much more than a sport, it's a community that will never let you down".

What has CrossFit brought you so far?
A better understanding of myself, confidence in my abilities and the ability to push my limits. CrossFit has also offered me an enjoyable physical transformation, although the personal benefits are far more valuable to me. CrossFit has helped me to come out of my reserve and become a stronger, more confident person. I'm proud of my progress, which I owe not only to hard work and perseverance, but also to a better diet. Indeed, nutrition is an essential key to progress.

Do you have an outstanding memory from your time at the box that you'd like to share?
More than a memory, it's words that come to mind. "Come on, don't give up", "Come on, you can", "Come on, one more", or when someone takes you by the hand because you've missed a rep and tells you: "It's okay, it'll be for the next one". This constant and precious encouragement from coaches and members motivates me to move forward and face life's challenges with greater strength. What better way to become a better version of yourself?
