We're happy to share the inspiring and positive #CrossFitStory of Jacques Hoffmann, who has been training with us since 2023. Find out more about his journey, how he trains to reach his goals and what motivates him to stay with CrossFit GVA.
Can you introduce yourself in a few words?
I'm a diplomat and have been proudly representing the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg at the United Nations in Geneva since April 2023. I love cats, good food and mountains (in that order). I'll be 40 in a few days and, if all goes well, I'll soon be a father!
When did you start CrossFit and why?
I started in 2021 at another gym after breaking my elbow in a cycling accident. I needed to get back into shape, but as the gym was quite far from my home, I didn't go regularly. After moving to Geneva in 2023, I took up CrossFit again with much greater commitment, at all levels.
Did you practice any other sports before taking up CrossFit?
Yes, I used to run (but my knees didn't like it too much), and I still do a lot of hiking and skiing. In my youth, I also played a lot of basketball.
What were your goals when you started CrossFit? Did you achieve them?
Initially, I was mainly interested in improving my fitness and losing a bit of weight, but also in finding a place where I could really switch off after work. Then my objectives evolved: I wanted to gain in endurance and strength. I achieved what I was aiming for two years ago, but with fitness, goals are constantly changing and evolving. There's always something new to achieve.
What are your goals for the coming year?
That's easy: I really need to master kipping pull-ups, and I want to finally succeed with handstand push-ups.
What do you particularly like about CrossFit GVA?
Firstly, I love the group classes: they always push you a little further than if you were training on your own. Secondly, the people I've met and made friends with, especially those who come to the 6pm, 7pm or 8pm classes like me. A big thank you and a special shoutout to Jon, Maëva and all the coaches who motivate us, inspire us and correct our techniques (keep your back straight!). I also appreciate the proximity to my home, so there's no excuse not to go. Finally, after a long day at work listening to endless speeches at the UN, an hour's workout clears my head and resets me.
Have you gained in confidence since you started CrossFit?
Yes, although I've always had a certain amount of self-confidence! But CrossFit has had a really positive impact on my mental and physical health.
Do you have a memorable experience to share on the box?
There isn't one specific moment, but many WODs have pushed me beyond what I thought possible. Whether it's under the pressure of the stopwatch or when you realize what muscular endurance really is after a WOD that seemed harder on the screen. And of course, that feeling of satisfaction after a tough session where you finally came through, when at 5.55pm you thought you'd call it all off. It's a gift that CrossFit continues to offer.
What's more, CrossFit has taught me to take better care of myself, to pay attention to my nutrition and my habits - things that will come in handy, as I'll soon have to look after someone else. And then, CrossFit is also about functional mobility, which will surely come in handy when carrying a baby and all its equipment.
What would you say to someone who's hesitating to start CrossFit for fear of injury or not being fit enough?
CrossFit is for everyone - you don't need to be fit, you just need to be motivated! Personally, I haven't had a single CrossFit-related injury in almost two years of practice, although it's true that there's always something that hurts a bit. As long as you respect the coaches' mantra: "Technique before weights", your progress will (hopefully) be injury-free.
