How to lose fat successfully?

We get a lot of questions about our nutrition program at CrossFit GVA. People primarily want to know how it works, and more importantly, if it works. There are no secrets to our fat loss program. If you are able to implement the changes required to lose fat, it works every time. Of course that does not make it easy, and the reason why so many people fail in their fat loss efforts is the inability to implement those changes.

Perhaps a more relevant approach would be to understand what is required to successfully lose fat. Here are a few of the preconditions that hopefully will help you to decide if you want participate in our nutrition coaching.

You have to be motivated and disciplined
A coach can provide you will all the tools you need to reach your goal, but ultimately it is up to you to use those tools. There is no coach on earth that can convince you to do something that you don’t want to do. A coach is there to accompany and guide you along you journey as well as providing support. However, if you are not motivated and disciplined, coaching will not help you.

You need to build your own diet plan.
You could be given the best diet for fat loss ever designed, but if it contains foods that you don’t like to eat, you won’t follow it. A more successful approach is to take your current diet and tweak it so that it is more in sync with your goals. Huge changes to your diet might be sustainable in the short term, but what about the long term ? Adjusting your current diet allows you to continue to eat the foods you enjoy and is sustainable in the long term.

Diets are hard, but not the way you think.
When most people think of dieting, they imagine themselves crying into a plate of lettuce while their friends are next door eating ice cream. This is not the case! You may have to cut back on high calorie foods like ice cream and pizza for a while, but you don’t have to deprive yourself of everything you love. More importantly, you don’t need to starve yourself at all. Diets are difficult to follow because they require planning, preparation and execution.

Planning is key.
This ties into our above point. Dieting is all about planning. You need to know in advance every meal you are going to eat during your diet phase. Winging it and deciding what to eat as you go will not get you the results you are looking for. The hard work required to successfully lose fat is much more in the planning of your meals, rather than actually eating them.

You have to measure.
No matter what the diet industry says, you need to eat less than you do now if you want to lose fat.

But how much less and how do we know how much is too much?
The only way to know how much you need to eat is by having some kind of system of measurement. This can be counting calories, reducing portion sizes or the number of meals you eat. There are many different approaches, but there must be some kind of measurement system.

You have to have the right life circumstances before you start a fat loss phase
This may sounds strange, but its important. A fat loss phase is stressful on your body. You are forcing it into doing something it very much does not want to do. You need to factor this stress into other potential stressors in your life. Are you super busy at work, do you have young kids, do you have problems with your partner or family, are you worried about money? None of us are 100% stress free at any one time and there is always something going on. However, you need to find a 8-12 week period where you other stressors are kept to a minimum. This will allow you to keep your focus on your goal and not get distracted or demotivated by outside factors.

Its not forever!
A diet phase should be kept to a maximum of 3 months. Nobody can or should diet indefinitely. Its important to have an end point in mind, otherwise the mental stress of dieting can be overwhelming. Hopefully by the end of you first diet phase you will have had some success. However, and perhaps more importantly, you will have the tools you need to implement any further diets phases as and when you need them.
