We're pleased to share the inspiring and positive #CrossFitStory of Jean-Pierre Lambelet, who has been training with us since 2021. Find out more about his journey, how he trains to reach his goals and what motivates him to stay with CrossFit GVA.
Jean-Pierre, can you introduce yourself in a few words?
My name is Jean-Pierre, I'm 37 years old and I'm from Fribourg, a small village in the countryside. Professionally, I'm a software engineer.
What were your sporting habits or level of physical activity before you started CrossFit?
When I was a kid, I used to play soccer. Then there was a big gap before I started trying out different sports with friends. Badminton, squash, rowing and also a subscription to the gym, which I went to three times.
What made you want to try CrossFit for the first time? Did you have any fears or apprehensions before you started?
The first time I did CrossFit was a bit by chance. A colleague invited me to join him and his rugby team for a session, because they were short of people. I had no idea what it was, so I wasn't really apprehensive.
How has CrossFit transformed your life, both physically and mentally?
Since I've been doing CrossFit, I've had a more regular sports routine. It's helped me to be more active instead of sitting on the couch. I've also noticed that I'm physically stronger and stand straighter.
What progress have you seen since you started out, whether in terms of strength, mobility or everyday life?
I started CrossFit with no experience of bodybuilding. I started with a simple wooden stick to learn the movements and now I can lift a few kilos. My cardio has also become pretty good, I've started running again and I'm holding my own. Mobility is still my weak point, but one day I promise to work on it more 😉.
Has this practice had an impact on your general well-being or other aspects of your life?
When I first came to Geneva, I had a herniated disc which was really painful. When I started CrossFit again, I strengthened my abs and my back, and now I'm completely pain-free.
What do you appreciate most about the CrossFit GVA community?
The atmosphere is super friendly and open. People are always ready to talk, we encourage each other during workouts, and nobody judges. The international aspect is also a plus, allowing me to practice English and German.
What are your favourite memories or moments here?
Meeting new people. It's thanks to CrossFit that I've made some really good friends in Geneva. I also like it when we all get together to finish a tough workout, especially on Wednesdays.
What types of WODs or movements do you like the most? And which ones do you find the most challenging?
I like varied workouts, with a bit of endurance and not too many repetitions in a row. If there's an ergo bike involved, that's even better. Movements that require flexibility, like the snatch and overhead squat, are what I find hardest.
What advice would you give to someone hesitating to take up CrossFit?
Come and give it a try! You'll struggle, you'll sweat, but you'll quickly progress and you'll be proud of yourself.
Do you have a particular ritual or routine before or after training?
Before training, I like to chat with the others. Afterwards, I just need a hot shower and a moment to relax and do nothing.
Is there a lesson or philosophy that CrossFit has taught you that you apply in your everyday life?
Sometimes you don't really want to do something, but the hardest thing is to start. Once you get going, it's almost over.
