Member of the Month: Kiran

Everyone’s journey is different, and some resonate particularly deeply. Kiran is one of those people whose story inspires others with its sincerity and strength. He faces his own challenges with clarity, courage, and quiet determination. At CrossFit GVA, we’re proud to have him among us—for his energy, his consistency, and his ability to keep going, even when things get tough.

What first brought you to CrossFit GVA?
I wasn’t a fan of the atmosphere at the gyms where I used to work out. I wanted to exercise without having to design my own workout plan. After several years of that, I just wanted to have fun without overthinking it.

How long have you been training with us, and what keeps you coming back?
Honestly, I don’t even remember anymore—it’s been several years. I keep coming back because it’s become my social hub, a place where I see people. Even though, after a session, I’m often too wiped out to talk… outside of here, I’m pretty much on my own.

What’s one thing other members might not know about you outside the gym?
I’m a paragliding pilot and fitness coach, though some of you might already know that. Before that, I studied art and film. I often draw and code, just for fun.

What are you most proud of since joining the box?
That I’m still alive after the workouts. More seriously, I’m proud that I managed to keep up with the Advanced class. I used to think it was only for machines, and that for me—with my tiny frame and my flimsy arms—it was out of reach.

What movement or type of workout used to intimidate you but doesn’t anymore?
Honestly, all the CrossFit movements—but especially the technical terms—I didn’t understand a thing at first.

What skill or goal are you working on right now?
I’m currently training for a mountaineering project that I’d like to document on film. The idea is to learn mountaineering and climb several peaks, all the way up to Mont Blanc. Having struggled with mental health issues and sometimes been marginalized because of them, I’d like to show that no matter what difficulties we face or what our journey has been, we have the right to believe in our dreams and that nothing should stop us from trying. Believing in yourself isn’t easy, and neither is taking that first step. I simply want to share an honest journey of recovery and see this dream through to the end.

How has CrossFit impacted your life outside the gym?
Exercise in general is my therapy. CrossFit has given me a place to belong, a community, and new connections. I feel grateful for every moment I spend there. I feel like I belong there, and for someone who is constantly searching for their place in the world, that’s priceless. So thank you to everyone who brings this place to life.
